Launch Monitor Buying Guide: Check Your Space Before the Specs
An editorial buying checklist, not a hands-on product test.
A launch monitor purchase is a setup decision as well as a device decision. Before comparing data fields, check where you will use it, how it must be positioned and what other equipment is needed.
Begin with the available space
Read the exact model’s placement and safety instructions. Garmin’s Approach R10 guidance, for example, includes requirements for the hitting area and free space around a net or impact screen. Requirements from one product should not be transferred to another model.
Measure the room and consider the complete swing area, device position, ball flight area and screen or net installation. If you cannot establish a safe setup that meets the relevant instructions, resolve that before buying a device.
Define your practice goal
Write one question you want the equipment to help answer. You might want to compare carry patterns, organize a practice session or play compatible simulated courses. These are different uses, and the right feature list depends on which matters to you.
Ask which values the model measures directly and which it calculates or estimates. Avoid assuming that two devices displaying the same label produce the value through the same method or under the same conditions.
Build the complete budget
- Device and any required mounting accessories.
- Mat, net or screen and their installation requirements.
- Compatible phone, tablet or computer.
- Software, memberships and renewals.
- Any specified balls, markers or other consumables.
Our suggested comparison uses the full setup cost rather than the device price alone. A lower headline price may not be a lower-cost route to the particular experience you want.
Check compatibility before ordering
Confirm the operating system, required app, connection method and simulator software you intend to use. Ask what works without a subscription and what happens if you stop paying for an optional service.
Plan how you will judge it
Follow the manufacturer’s setup process consistently. If a result looks surprising, check alignment, placement, conditions and the manual’s troubleshooting steps before assuming a change in your swing. A few comparisons against another consumer device do not establish certified accuracy.
We have not tested or ranked launch monitors here. This checklist is intended to prevent a mismatch between the advertised device and your actual space, budget and practice routine. Consult the exact product documentation before purchase or installation.
